Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey is a British drama series created by Julian Fellowes. It first aired on ITV in the UK on 26th September 2010. The series, set in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey, depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era. 

Events depicted throughout the series include news of the sinking of the Titanic in the first series; the outbreak of World War I, the Spanish influenza pandemic, and the Marconi scandal in the second series; and the Interwar period and the formation of the Irish Free State in the third series. One of the best characters in the series is Violet (Lady Grantham) famous for her ironic and sometimes even sarcastic comments. The character is played by amazing Maggie Smith.

A song with many prepositions

Hi! Driving back home I heard a song on the radio which I had known long before but it never dawned  on me that it's a great song to learn and remember some expressions with prepositions as well as Present Continuous. The song is Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner. Diner /ˈdaɪ.nər/ is a restaurant guest, a customer, a dining car on a train or..., especially in US - a small restaurant. Since Suzanne is American, Tom's Diner is rather a small restaurant owned by Tom :)

prepositions - przyimki

diner - gość/klient; wagon restauracyjny; knajpka

rather - raczej

owned by - prowadzona przez; 'posiadana przez'

Condolences czyli kondolencje, może temat nie za wesoły, ale czasami może się przydać wiedza o tym jak złożyć komuś kondolencje po angielsku. Oczywiście, oby się nigdy nie przydawała...

Można mówić np. o heartfelt condolences (kondolencjach płynących prosto z serca lub dozgonne) lub sincere condolences (szczerych kondolencjach). Jeśli chodzi o czasowniki, których możemy użyć z condolences to m.in. mogą to być:

convey (przekazywać)

Ghost /ɡəʊst/ czyli duch. Dzisiaj będzie zatem o duchach, tylko o tych lingwistycznych oczywiście :) 

ghost czyli duch albo widmo, może być np. duch zmarłego króla - the ghost of the dead king, można wierzyć w duchy lub nie - believe in ghosts or not believe in ghosts. Czasami ktoś może wyglądać tak jakby zobaczył ducha - He/she looks as if he/she has seen a ghost. 

No cóż, nie zawsze może być kolorowo i możemy widzieć lub mogą nas męczyć upiory przeszłości - the ghosts of the past. Dobra wiadomość jest taka, że możemy się tych upiorów pozbyć, czyli lay the ghosts of the past.

ghost to też cień, np. taki cień uśmiechu to the ghost of a smile, a the ghost of a chance to cień szansy.

ghost to też czasownik występujący w takich wyrażeniach jak to ghost somebody's speeches, czyli pisać za kogoś przemówienia. Ghost for somebody to zatem pisać za kogoś.
