Angielski dla Wymagających

Think!

THINK is clearly a verb. We know it very well and think that we know everything about it. Well, I want to show you something rather surprising about verb THINK...

We usually say:

I think that...
Uważam, że... / Myslę, że...

I'm thinking about...
Zastanawiam się nad...

Verb THINK is usually a STATE VERB, which means that we do not normally use it with -ING ending (= in continuous tenses). However, when it doesn't mean 'believe or have opinion that' (Uważam, że...), but 'consider something' (zastanawiać się nad czymś / rozważać coś) we can use it in the continuous form.

I think that we have made a serious mistake.
Myślę, że zrobiliśmy poważny błąd.

- What are you thinking about?
- I'm thinking about changing my job.

- O czym myślisz?
- Zastanawiam się nad zmianą pracy.

We can always use an adverb to modify the verb THINK:

I personally think that....
Osobiście uważam, że...

I really think that...
Na prawdę uważam, że...

I honestly think that...
Szczerze myślę, że...

We can think deeply (poważnie / dogłębnie), carefully (dokładnie / uważnie), long and hard (długo i intensywanie), rationally (racjonalnie), frantically (szalenie) etc.

There is also a possibility of using an adjective or even a noun after verb THINK!

Let's see...

Think big!
(Try to achieve a lot!)
Postaraj się osiągnąć jak najwięcej / więcej

If you want to make money you have to think money.
Jeśli chcesz robić pieniądze, musisz myśleć o pieniądzach.

So, if an adjective follows verb THINK it means that we need to think in a particular way and when there is a noun behind it- it means that we need to think about this particular thing.

Compare:

think differently = think in a different way
HOW should I think? = differently
pomyśl inaczej

think different = think about or of (something) different
WHAT should I think of? = (something) different
pomyśl: inne / inny

By the way, THINK DIFFERENT was a slogan used in Apple advertising in 1997:

THINK PINK!

I have come across this funny piece from Funny Face musical where an editor explains what a magazine should be (explicit!) and then she invents the new trend: THINK PINK! Have a look:

It turns out that nowadays fashion magazines also promote THINKING PINK ;)

THINK SMALL

And the last classic example: THINK SMALL from the VW advertising:

What can I say...

THINK ENGLISH!

Love, Love, Love...

I've developed an infatuation with him. (Zadurzyłam się w nim)

It's just a passing infatuation. (To tylko chwilowe zauroczenie.)

He can be the object of inafatuation. (On może być obiektem uwielbienia.)

She's behaving like an infatuated teenager. (Zachowuje się jak zakochana nastolatka.)

A tutaj Maroon 5 o INFATUATION:

Mamy też w repertuarze słowo CRUSH, czyli zadurzenie lub zauroczenie:

It's just a little crush. (To tylko drobne zauroczenie.)

I think I have a crush on you. (Chyba się w tobie zadurzyłam.)

O CRUSH śpiewała niejaka Jennifer Paige:

No, jest też ADMIRATION, czyli podziw lub zachwyt. Fakt, to nie to co miłość, ale zawsze może posłużyć jako zastępstwo dla LOVE:

I admire him! (Podziwiam go!)

She admires chocolate! (Ona kocha czekoladę!)

Everybody looked in admiration at her. (Każdy patrzył na nią z zachwytem.)

Incubus ADMIRATION ( a tak przy okazji, czy jesteście w stanie usłyszeć w tej piosence idiom SEE EYE TO EYE oznaczający zgadzanie się z kimś?)

Następny krok to DEVOTION, czyli oddanie lub umiłowanie, a nawet poświęcenie:

Their devotion to each other is amazing. (Ich wzajemne przywiązanie jest niesamowite.)

The reason why she is so hard-working is her devotion to arts. (Powodem dla którego ona jest taka pracowita jest jej umiłowanie sztuki.)

Nie sposób nie wspomnieć też o AFFECTION, czyli o sympatii lub uczuciu:

She stroke him with affection. (Pogłaskała go czule.)

I think she is showing me affection. (Myslę, że ona okazuje mi sympatię.)

He has great affection for her. (On ja darzy wielkim uczuciem / wielką sympatią.)

He has little affection for her. (On jej nie darzy sympatią.)

I am determined to win her affection. (Jestem zdeterminowany, aby zdobyć jej serce.)

Kolejnym synonimem może być ATTRACTION, czyli nic innego jak pociąg do kogoś:

You could sense the attraction between them. (Mogłeś wyczuć wzajemny pociąg między nimi.)

Naturalnie przechodzimy do DESIRE, czyli pożądania lub pragnienia:

He feels a strong desire for her. (On jej pożąda.)

Nie można zapomnieć o PASSION, czyli namiętności lub żarliwym uczuciu do kogoś:

I think they had a night of passion. (Myślę, że spędzili namiętną noc.)

Kolejne słowo związane z miłością to ROMANCE, czyli romans, romantyzm lub romantyczność:

I think they're having a romance! (Myślę, że oni maja romans!)

It was just a holiday / vacation romance. (To był tylko wakacyjny romans.)

Na koniec LA ROUX i I'm not your toy :)

Love, love is like a stubborn youth (uparty młodzieniec / wyrostek)
That you'd rather just deny (zaprzeczać)
I'm walking on a broken roof
While I'm looking at the sky

It's all false love and affection
You don't want me
You just like the attention
Yes it's all false love and affection
You don't like me
You just want the attention

I'm not your toy
This isn't another girl meets boy

Love, love hides in a smoky light
And I can never find the truth
Boy, your touches leave me mystified
And I wish I could believe in you

Yes it's all false love and affection
You don't want me
You just like the attention
Yes it's all false love and affection
You don't like me
You just want the attention

I'm not your toy
This isn't another girl meets boy

It's all false love and affection
You don't want me
You just like the attention
Yes it's all false love and affection
You don't like me
You just want the attention

I'm not your toy
This isn't another girl meets boy

Question Tags

Question Tags, czyli tzw. pytania rozłączne. Są to krótkie formy pytające na końcu zdania twierdzącego lub przeczącego. Tak naprawdę występują też w języku polskim, tyle tylko, że w nieco innej formie (popatrzcie na tłumaczenia zdań poniżej).

Question Tags

It wasn't a very good film, was it?
To nie był bardzo dobry film, nieprawda?

She takes sugar, doesn't she?
Ona słodzi, nieprawda?

You're the new secretary, aren't you?
Jesteś nową sekretarką, czyż nie?

It's hot, isn't it?
Jest gorąco, nieprawda?

Tom gave you the tickets, didn't he?
Tom dał ci bilety, czyż nie?

I bet you have never seen anything like that, have you?

Ciekawe / Podchwytliwe przypadki

Pytaniem rozłącznym do I am jest...  AREN'T I?

I'm late, aren't I?

Do zdań rozkazujących dodajemy najczęściej WILL YOU? lub WON'T YOU? bądź też WOULD YOU? lub CAN'T YOU?

Give me a hand, will you?
Pomóż mi, dobrze?

Don't forget, will you?
Nie zapomnij, dobrze?

Open the door, would you?
Otwóż drzwi, dobrze?

Shut up, can't you?
Zamknij się, dobrze?

Po LET'S dodajemy SHALL WE?

Let's go, shall we?
Chodźmy, dobrze?

W konstrukcji z THERE, podmiotem w pytaniu rozłącznym jest też THERE:

There is something wrong, isn't there?
Coś jest nie tak, (co) nie?

Uważajcie na wyrażenia, które mają w sobie zaprzeczenie, np. NEVER, NO, NOBODY, HARDLY, LITTLE lub SCARCELY ponieważ dodajemy do nich pytanie rozłączne w formie twierdzącej:

It's no good, is it?
It's no good, isn't it?

It's hardly snowed all December, has it?
Ledwo co padał śnieg w grudniu, prawda?

Kiedy podmiotem jest NOTHING lub EVERYTHING, w pytaniu rozłącznym używamy IT:

Everything can happen, can't it?
Wszystko się może zdarzyć, nie?

Kiedy podmiotem jest NOBODY, SOMEBODY lub EVERYBODY, w pytaniu rozłącznym używamy THEY:

Nobody came, did they?
Nikt nie przyszedł, prawda?

Często zdarza się, że po zdaniu twierdzącym używamy twierdzącego pytania rozłącznego, np.:

So you're going to NY, are you? How nice!
Więc jedziesz do Nowego Jorku, tak? Świetnie!

She thinks she is clever, does she? Well, well...
Jej się wydaje, że jest taka mądra, tak? No cóż...

Dzieje się tak w przypadku, gdy powtarzamy to, co zostało nam już zakomunikowane i chcemy wyrazić w ten sposób nasze zdumienie, zaskoczenie, zainteresowanie czy też zachwyt.

Recording Vocabulary

I want to show you a way of recording vocabulary that you have problems remembering. Recording new words in such a way of course has pros and cons, which I will discuss below, however, it can prove very helpful to some of you.

What do you need?
Basically, not much. You need to prepare a template in MS Word, print it out and fill it in every time you find a word which is very difficult to remember. Or - make such a table in your notebook.

Who is it for?
It's good for almost all learners, however, the visual ones will appreciate it most. It's a good way of remembering some words which we always tend to forget.

What are the pros?
  • To fill in the information in the table we need to devote some time to a particular word, which helps us remember it.
  • The table includes a lot of information, so we learn more than one word.
  • It's very neat and clear!

What are the cons?
Time, time, time... Preparing such notes is time-consuming... However, it's still worth it!

Here is a sample table for CONSISTENT:

ENGLISH WORD
consistent
ENGLISH DEFINITION
not changing in behaviours, attitudes or qualities
POLISH EQUIVALENT
konsekwentny
PART OF SPEECH
Adjective
SAMPLE SENTENCE
I have been consistent in my approach over the years.
PICTURE
WORD FAMILY
Consistently (adv)
Consistency (n)
ANTONYM
inconsistent
SYNONYMS
steady, reliable, dependable
RHYMING WORD
Consistent ASSISTANT
