Angielski dla Wymagających

So and Such

SO jest przysłówkiem (adverb), podczas gdy SUCH - przymiotnikiem (adjective). Często nam się mylą, czego wynikiem są błędy. SO...THAT i SUCH...THAT są spójnikami w zdaniach wynikowych (adverbial clauses of result). Brzmi grubo! Przyjrzymy się im dzisiaj nieco dokładniej.

SO

Po SO może wystąpić przysłówek (adverb) lub przymiotnik (adjective):

SO + ADVERB / ADJECTIVE

The concert was so great that all the fans were thrilled!
Koncert był tak świetny, że wszyscy fani byli podekscytowani!

Frank was speaking so loudly that I couldn't hear anything!
Franek mówił tak głośno, że nic nie mogłam usłyszeć.

SO możemy też używać z MUCH lub MANY:

I have so much time that I can help you.
Mam tyle czasu, że mogę ci pomóc.

They had so many friends that everyone envied them.
Mieli tylu przyjaciół, że każdy im zazdrościł.

SO może zostać poddane inwersji w celu zbudowania zdania nieco bardziej oficjalnego/formalnego:

So great was the concert that all the fans were thrilled.

So loudly was Frank speaking that I couldn't hear anything.

SUCH

Po SUCH używamy przymiotnika (adjective) z rzeczownikiem (noun) lub samego rzeczownika i pamiętamy o dodaniu rodzajnika A/AN po SUCH jeśli rzeczownik po nim wystepujący jest policzalny i w liczbie pojedynczej:

SUCH + (A/AN) + (ADJECTIVE) + NOUN

Frank was such a good child that everyone loved him.
Franek był tak dobrym dzieckiem, że wszyscy go kochali.

It was such good weather that we decided to go for a walk.
Była taka dobra pogoda, że zdecydowaliśmy pójść na spacer.

Carrie is such a baby!
Carrie jest takim dzieckiem!

He's got such patience that it's astonishing.
On ma taką cierpliwość, że to jest niesamowite.

Po SUCH nie możemy stosować ani MUCH ani MANY!

SUCH + A/AN + ADJECTIVE + NOUN można zastąpić też następującą strukturą z SO:

SO + ADJECTIVE + A/AN + NOUN

Joe is such a nice kid! = Joe is so nice a kid!

Carrie is such a good friend. = Carrie is so good a friend.

... i coś na deser z SUCH w roli głównej... Lou Reed and others!

Just a perfect day
drink Sangria in the park
And then later
when it gets dark, we go home
Just a perfect day
feed animals in the zoo
Then later
a movie, too, and then home
Oh, it's such a perfect day
I'm glad I spend it with you
Oh, such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on
You just keep me hanging on
Just a perfect day
problems all left alone
Weekenders on our own
it's such fun
Just a perfect day
you made me forget myself
I thought I was
someone else, someone good
Oh, it's such a perfect day
I'm glad I spent it with you
Oh, such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on
You just keep me hanging on
You're going to reap just what you sow...
