Angielski dla Wymagających

Snow white snow

It's Sunday morning. I'm sitting cosily at home sipping coffee which is black as pitch and facing the window behind which the only thing I see is white snow...

*
sitting cosily - wygodnie siedząc
sipping coffee - popijając kawę
(as) black as pitch - czarny jak smoła

No właśnie...

Powiemy zatem 'Snow is...' i 'There isn't much snow'. Czasami jednak może wystąpić w liczbie mnogiej, np. tutaj:

The fist snows of winter are here. (Pierwsze śniegi zimy już spadły.)

SNOW to też w amerykańskim slangu 'bajerować kogoś' po naszemu:

They would snow the public into believing that! (Zbajerowali by ludzi aby w to uwierzyli!)

No cóż, czasami zdarza się i tak, że ni z tego, ni z owego nas zasypie, czyli jesteśmy SNOWED IN lub SNOWED UNDER, np. na kilka dni jak to miało miejsce ostatnio w USA:

We were snowed in for a few days. (Byliśmy zasypani przez kilka dni.)
My car was just snowed under!

I had to finish the project quickly, so I was just snowed under with work!

The entire presentation was a complete snow job.

Z drugiej strony można być czystym jak kryształ, czyli BE PURE AS THE DRIVEN SNOW:

I hardly think she was as pure as the driven snow.

Słowo SNOW pochodzi z języka germańskiego i w staroangielskim brzmiało  snāw.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers
SNOW

Enjoy!

Come to decide that the things that I tried
Were in my life just to get high on

When I sit alone come get a little more known
But I need more than myself this time

Step from the road to the sea to the sky
And I do believe what we rely on (polegać na)

When I lay it on (kiedy ci się zwierzam)
Come get to play it on
All my life to sacrifice (poświęcić)

Hey oh listen what I say oh
I got your
Hey oh now listen what I say oh

When will I know that I really can't go
To the well ones more time to decide on

When it's killing me
When will I really see
All that I need to look inside

Come to believe that I better not leave
Before I get my chance to ride

When it's killing me
What do I really need
All that I need to look inside

Hey oh listen what I say oh
Come back in
Hey oh look in what I say oh

The more I see the less I know
The more I like to let it go (zapomnieć o tym, odpuścić sobie to) ...hey oh

Deep beneath the cover of another perfect wonder
Where it's so white as snow

Privately divided by a world so undecided
And there's nowhere to go

In between the cover of another perfect wonder
Where it's so white as snow

Running through a field where all my tracks will
Be concealed and there is nowhere to go

When to descend to amend for a friend (zrekompensować przyjacielowi)
All the channels that have broken down

Now you bring it up (poruszasz ten temat)
I'm gonna ring it up
Just to hear you sing it out

Step from the road to the sea to the sky
And I do believe what we rely on

When I lay it on
Come get to play it on
All my life to sacrifice

Hey oh listen what I say oh
I got your
Hey oh listen what I say oh

The more I see the less I know
The more I like to let it go...hey oh

Deep beneath the cover of another perfect wonder
Where it's so white as snow

Privately divided by a world so undecided
And there's nowhere to go

In beneath the cover of another perfect wonder
Where it's so white as snow

Running through a field where all my tracks will
Be concealed and there is nowhere to go

I said, "hey, oh yeah, oh yeah"
Tell my Lord now
Hey oh yeah, oh yeah

THE APPLE OF SB'S EYE

The idiom for today is connected with one of the most popular fruits and could be called a fruit idiom. However, the meaning is far from fruity.

THE APPLE OF SB'S EYE

To be the apple of somebody's eye means to be the person who somebody loves most of all and adores very much.

We can say:

His mother adores him.

or we can use an idiom:

He is the apple of his mother's eye.

In Polish we would say CZYJEŚ OCZKO W GŁOWIE

Do you remember this song?

Chumbawamba
She's got all the friends that money can buy

She's got all the friends that money can buy

She's the apple of her Daddy's eye
She's got all the friends that money can buy
She's the apple of her Daddy's eye

The family money has a magnetic pull (yeah yeah yeah)
Her social diary is always full
And both her faces, so easy on the eye
And everyone worth knowing is kissing her behind

She's got all the friends that money can buy
She's the apple of her Daddy's eye
She's got all the friends that money can buy
She's the apple of her Daddy's eye

Style has a price without much change
If you have to ask, then it's out of your range
And both her faces, so easy on the eye
And everyone worth knowing is kissing her behind

Ooh ah, ooh ah
Ooh ah, ooh ah

Versace and Prada
They mean nothing to me, to me (ooh aah)
Well, you can buy your friends
But I'll hate you for free
Hate you for free

She's got all the friends that money can buy
She's the apple of her Daddy's eye
She's got all the friends that money can buy
She's the apple of her Daddy's eye
