While we reform our education system... A few words on PBL

... Finland is doing the same thing! How differently, though...

While we are (not) discussing the right of middle schools (or junior high schools as they'd be called in AmE) to exist, Finland – which for years has been an unsurpassed leader in the quality of education – is thinking of placing skills at the heart of schooling in more or less the same way as traditional subjects. This idea has been prompted by a growing need for adjusting the way we teach to the digital era we all live in (how thoughtful and open-minded!) Apparently, Finland seems to have noticed the fact that in 21st century we do not longer rely on books and school to gain knowledge. The world around us is one big source of knowledge – from museums and galleries to smart phones. One needs to be quite a smart manager to know where and how to find information they are looking for. Moreover, you need some skills to be critical of the information that is all around.

This new approach is called PBLproject-based learning* and is targeted at teaching skills like critical thinking, learning to understand and think, collaboration, communication, teamwork, self-managed study or technical abilities to operate diferent software. (If you haven't heard about it before and  need a more in-depth info on PBL – scroll down – you'll find links to articles and videos on PBL at the end of this post.)

*metoda nauczania rozwiązywania problemów or nauczanie problemowe

It is not that Finland has embraced new technology recently. There aren't any restrictions for students to use mobile devices at school, doesn't matter if they are smart phones or laptops – it is actually promoted as they are an important source of information. Children are taught to use them as research tools.

As with everything, there are some worries about PBL, too. One argument against it is that it may result in a weaker grounding in a subject – that for example students will not gain enough fact knowledge necessary to get to university. There is also a question if PBL will not create a gap between the least and the most able students – this means that the bright students will gain advantage over the ones who still need more teacher help and guidance in order to learn.

All in all, the changes in Finnish education system are being introduced very slowly and with due care – contrary to...

A few facts about Finland's education system:

  • the biggest reforms were introduced about 50 years ago – since then Finns  have excelled in the international rankings for education
  • you will not find exams or tests in Finnish schools before the age of 16
  • children start school at the age of 7
  • there is practically no homework and summer holiday is 10 weeks long
  • about 66% of students go to college (Source - Smithsonian)
  • the difference between the weakest and the strongest students is the smallest in the world (OECD)
  • science classes are small and students perform experiments every time
  • teachers are given the same status as doctors and lawyers
  • average class size is 19 pupils

Inversion – Inwersja

Inwersja, inwersja...

Hm.. Należałoby zacząć od jakiejś definicji...

Inwersja to tzw. szyk przestawny, czyli przestawienie elementów zdania.

I have been to London only once.
(zdanie twierdzące, szyk oznajmujący – PODMIOT (subject – I) ORZECZENIE (verb – have been)

W pytaniu nastąpi przestawienie tych elementów i rozbijemy orzeczenie wstawiając w środek podmiot:

Have I been to London only once?

Tutaj w czasie present perfect.

Może to być orzeczenie modalne, czyli czasownik modalny (modal verb) i czasownik – 'can see' w drugim przykładzie. Wiele konstrukcji czasowych w języku angielskim będzie miało dość rozbudowane orzeczenie, np. czas Present Perfect, gdzie będziemy mieli do czynienia z dwoma elementami orzeczenia – czasownikiem posiłkowym (auxiliary) oraz czasownikiem głównym (main verb). Popatrzcie na ostatnie zdanie poniżej – 'have' to nasz czasownik posiłkowy (auxiliary), a 'argued' to czasownik główny (verb).

Wszystko ładnie, wszystko pięknie...
A czasami jest tak... czyli z inwersją :)

Ponownie zwróćcie uwagę, że mamy do czynienia z pytaniem w środku zdania twierdzącego: 'did he know?' 'can you see?' 'have they argued?'

Należą one do grupy tzw. NEGATIVE ADVERBS, czyli przysłówków o negatywnym/ograniczającym znaczeniu. Inne z tej grupy to:

SELDOM
Seldom do you experience such a warm welcome.

NEVER (BEFORE)
Never have I seen anything like this!

BARELY/SCARCELY/HARDLY ... WHEN
Barely had I opened the door when I saw a huge mess in the kitchen.

NO SOONER ... THAN
No sooner had they started to walk than it started to rain.

ONLY AFTER/LATER/ONCE/THEN/WHEN
Only later did we realise how devastated our house was after the storm.
Only when the storm came did we realise how unprepared for it we were.

ONLY BY/IN/WITH etc.
Only with their help have we managed to finish on time.

AT NO TIME/IN NO WAY/ON NO ACCOUNT/UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES
At no time did she say she was tired.
On no account may the employees make private phone calls here.
Under no circumstances can you leave this room.

NOT... /NOT ONLY... BUT ALSO/NOT UNTIL etc.
Not a single word did she say to me.
Not only did they win the race, but they also broke the world record.
Not until I called her did I learn about what had happened.

2. Conditional sentences

Taki zabieg czyni zdania o wiele bardziej formalnymi/oficjalnymi:

1st Conditional – tylko kiedy mamy w zdaniu SHOULD
If you should feel worse, contact your GP immediately.
Should you feel worse, contact your GP immediately.

2nd Conditional – tylko kiedy mamy w zdaniu WERE
If I were to fail the exam, I would be very disappointed.
Were I to fail the exam, I would be very disappointed.

3rd Conditional
If I hadn't known about it, I wouldn't have talked to her.
Had I not known about it, I wouldn't have talked to her.*

3. AS

The dinner was exceptionally good, as was the dessert.
Susan knew, as did her husband, that their marriage was over.

4. SO and SUCH

Po SO i SUCH też często stosujemy inwersję. Do SO 'doczepiamy' przymiotnik (adjective) i w dalszej części zdania mamy THAT:

So good was the weather taht we decided to stay longer.

SUCH z kolei występuje z czasownikiem TO BE i THAT w dalszej części zdania:

Such are the prices of gas that fewer and fewer people decide to drive these days.
Such was the noise that we decided to close all the windows.

5. NEITHER and NOR

I couldn't speak well, and neither could I pronounce before I went to that language school.
The board didn't want to move the office out of the town, nor did the employees.

... albo w krótkich odpowiedziach:

'I don't want to go there.' 'Neither do I.'/'Nor do I.'

6. MAY

Kiedy czegoś sobie/innym życzymy za pomocą MAY, to stosujemy inwersję w zdaniu:

May you be blessed!
May all your wishes come true!

7. Adverbial expressions of place

In the middle of the room stood an amazing armchair.
Over the horizon slowly rose the moon.
On the sofa sat his grandfather.

8. HERE and THERE

Po HERE i THERE w krótkich, czasem nawet utartych zwrotach w mowie też mamy inwersję:

Here comes Sue!
There goes Sally.

Here she comes!
There you go!

9. Inversion as a literary device

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines
 W. Sheakespeare "Sonnet 18"

Jakże biedniej brzmiałoby zwykłe: Sometimes the eye of heaven shines too hot... ;)

GLOUCESTER: Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds that lour’d upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.
W. Sheakespeare "Richard III"

Może trochę bardziej współczesny przykład – Walt Whitman:

I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
W. Whitman "Song of myself"

Albo Robert Frost:

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
R. Frost “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”

10. YODA ...

To discuss the above topic I used the invaluable Michael Swan's Practical English Usage and Martin Hewings' Advanced Grammar in Use.

Jak używać Vocaroo w pracy domowej? How to use Vocaroo for homework?

Możliwości jakie daje to narzędzie mogą naprawdę ułatwić i urozmaicić naukę wielu uczniom.

Vocaroo is a voice recording service online. It can prove to be a really valuable tool used for practicing speaking especially when we incorporate it in our homework tasks. That would be a really nice alternative to traditional written exercises (which we all love checking soooo much!;) Think about your students with special needs like dyslexia (and other learning disabilities), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and other hyperactivity issues or the ones with problems concentrating in any way. Recording homework using for instance Vocaroo can really facilitate and diversify their learning process!

Vocaroo

SZYBKA INSTRUKCJA:
A SHORT TUTORIAL:
(advised with ALL students – you can prepare your own, present Vocaroo in class or show ss one of you tube tutorials – there are plenty – I will also include one here)

Jak możemy użyć Vocaroo w ramach pracy domowej?

2. Od czasu do czasu możemy urozmaicić nawet typowe ćwiczenia gramatyczno-leksykalne i poprosić aby zostały one wykonane ustnie poprzez nagranie odpowiedzi.

How can you use Vocaroo for homework?

1. Have your ss do any type of SPEAKING activity as homework – they just need to record it at home and send it back to you or other student(s) to be checked.

2. You could even use Vocaroo to diversify ss' grammatical or vocabulary homework tasks by asking them to record the answers instead of/ or together with writing them down on a worksheet.

3. You can even ask ss to record a piece of text to practice reading and pronunciation – that is an idea not only for lower levels!

4. Such a form of doing homework is very helpful for ss with dyslexia, spelling disorders, ADHD orany other problems concentration problems. There are also ss who claim to perform better orally on tests and in general – that might be a more beneficial option for them.

Illiteracy

ILLITERACY to ANALFABETYZM. Jeśli ktoś jest ILLITERATE, to jest ANALFABETĄ. 'He's illiterate – he can't read or write.' Sad but true...

Wystarczy, że użyjecie podanych linków.
