Angielski dla Wymagających

Giving advice

Giving advice to udzielanie rad.

You should eat more vegetables.

Should I tell her about it?

You shouldn't behave like that!

should have + 3rd Form

You should have told me!
(Powinieneś mi był powiedzieć!)

You shouldn't have been so unkind!
(Nie powinieneś był być taki nieuprzejmy!)

ought to - to tak jak should 'powinieneś' i często stosować je można wymiennie z should właśnie:

She ought to be more polite, shouldn't she?
(Powinna być bardziej uprzejma, czyż nie?)

They oughtn't to drive like this.
(Nie powinni tak jeździć.)

Jednakże should jest zdecydowanie częściej używane niż ought to.

He ought to be ready.
He ought be ready.

Do you think I ought to go there? (zamiast - Ought I to go there?)
I don't think you ought to/should go there.
Should I go there?

Ought to możemy użyć z have i trzecią formą czasownika do komentowania przeszłych wydarzeń, dokładnie tak jak używamy should:

I ought to have phoned her yesterday, but I forgot.
(Miałam do niej zadzwonić wczoraj ale zapomniałam.)

Alanis Morissette "You oughta know"
oughta to ought to ;)

I want you to know I'm happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
Another version of me
Is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theater
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

'Cause the love that you gave that we made
wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, 'til you died
But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
And now you're thinking of me when you fuck her

'Cause the love that you gave that we made
wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, 'til you died
But you're still alive

'Cause the joke that you laid in the bed that was me
And I'm not gonna fade as soon as you close your eyes
And you know it
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it...well can you feel it

"Jako, że Darwin stwierdził iż przetrwa
najsilniejszy, pomyślałem, że lepiej zacznę uprawiać sport."
had better - czyli 'lepiej żebyś' lub 'lepiej by było, żebyś':

You'd better call him now.
(Lepiej żebyś do niej zadzwonił teraz.)

had better może też służyć do wyrażania gróźb:

You'd better tell me that right now!
(Lepiej mi powiedz to od razu!)

Formą przeczącą jest had better not:

You'd better not wake me up next time.
(Lepiej żebyś mnie nie budził następnym razem.)

Można też zapytać:

Hadn't I better tell him the truth?

Sam Brown "Stop" - pełna You'd better stop

If I were you, I would... / If I were in your shoes, I would... - 'gdybym był tobą...' / 'gdybym był na twoim miejscu...' to drugi okres warunkowy, którego też możemy użyć do dawania rad:

If I were in your shoes, I would sell the house and move to the city.

I wouldn't do that if I were you!
(Nie robiłbym tego gdybym był tobą.)

must - czyli 'musisz' to też sposób na wyrażenie naszej opinii o tym co ktoś powinien zrobić, jest ono zdecydowanie 'mocniejsze' i bardziej zdecydowane niż should:

You must tell her about it!
(Musisz jej o tym powiedzieć!)

You must see this film! It's awsome!
(Musisz zobaczyć ten film! Jest niesamowity!)
